Challenges Before the Water Well
- The school previously relied on a seasonal water well located 500 meters away, which dried up during summer months.
- When the seasonal well was dry, people had to travel 5 hours to the river to fetch water, leading to:
- Delayed classes for students.
- Families being late to their fields or businesses.
- Hygiene was a significant challenge for the 536 learners at the school:
- After using the toilet, students had to walk 500 meters to wash their hands, which often led to them skipping the task and returning to class without proper sanitation.
Impact of the New Water Well
With the installation of this water well, the lives of both the learners and the community have been transformed:
- Students now have access to water on-site, promoting better hygiene and healthier habits.
- The well supports not just the school but also 60 families in Mbera Village, improving their daily lives.
- The learners are visibly healthier and better cared for, with water available for drinking, cleaning, and sanitation.
Present at the dedication are Chief Mbera and Head Teacher Ernest Banda, along with the learners of the school and the people of Mbera Village, who are deeply grateful for this life-changing contribution.
The Brian and Joelle Kelly Family Foundation has made a profound impact, ensuring that clean water is readily available to this community.
From everyone at Makalanga Full Primary School and Mbera Village, we say thank you for your generosity.
