Stories / Quotes:
Families: 30
Water committee: 5 men and 5 women
Stelia Joram: We think she is 80 years old. She came here at 5 years old. Stelia used to get water from a swamp and Lake Malawi. Later on this village would get water from a well but it just was a little bit of water. Then they had a deep well with little to no water. In her life, this is her first water well. Now she gets 3 buckets of water a day.
She had 7 kids and now just 1 lives (Miriam).
“The shallow well was private. We paid K100 per day and the lines were long so we only got one or two buckets. Now we get as much as they want. Yes, the women would fight over at the shallow well for a place in line, but now there is TOTAL FREEDOM, PRECIOUS FREEDOM, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. We are bathing and growing gardens. Cholera is palibe (gone/ no more).”
All kids of school age are going to school.
People used to suffer from cholera and diarrhea. Miriam’s child was admitted to the clinic for cholera but now “palibe” cholera = no more sickness
They now have gardens of tomatoes, onions, pumpkins, etc. They all have businesses selling fish and tomatoes.
They get to bathe and wash every day
The women were getting beaten by their husbands because they didn’t have enough water
They also would get beaten at the well if they didn’t pay for the water (that well was ½ km away).
