Challenges Before the Water Well
- Distance to Water Source:
Before this water well was installed, the students had to walk 500 meters to fetch water, which was also shared with the local village. - Disruptions to Learning:
The students often had to wait for villagers to finish fetching water before they could draw any, causing significant missed lessons, which affected their academic performance. - Hygiene Issues:
Without easy access to water, the school faced challenges in maintaining hygiene. Students could not wash their hands after using the toilet, and cleaning the classrooms was also difficult.
Impact of the New Water Well
- Improved Access to Water for the School:
With the new water well, students no longer have to leave school to fetch water. They can access it easily, improving their attendance and concentration in class. - Positive Effect on Hygiene:
The school can now maintain proper hygiene practices, and students can wash their hands and clean the classrooms as needed. - Community Benefits:
This well not only benefits the school but also serves 30 households in the surrounding area, improving the lives of the entire community. - Reduction in Community Conflict:
Prior to the well’s installation, there were conflicts within families, especially women taking too long to fetch water. Now, with easier access, families are more harmonious, and women can complete their chores on time.
We once again thank the Brian and Joelle Kelly Family Foundation for their generosity. You have made a lasting difference for the children at Nzeru Private School and for the entire community.
Your contribution is helping to protect the future generations of Malawi from waterborne diseases, and for that, we are incredibly grateful.
