Challenges Before the Water Well
- Distance to Water Source:
Before the installation of this well, the nearest water source was 2 kilometers away, which created major difficulties for both the students and the community. - Hygiene and Health Issues:
Without easy access to water, it was hard for the school to establish proper hygiene practices. Parents had to bring water, but it was often insufficient, leading to a lack of access to clean drinking water and waterborne diseases among the students. - Class Disruptions:
Students would frequently excuse themselves from class because of the thirst and waterborne illnesses they suffered from, affecting their ability to attend classes and perform well in school.
Impact of the New Water Well
- Access to Water for the School:
Now, with the new water well, students and teachers have easy access to water at the school. This means they no longer have to leave classes to fetch water, and they can stay in class, focused and hydrated. - Improved Hygiene and Health:
The well has improved the hygiene at the school, and students are no longer suffering from waterborne diseases. The presence of clean, accessible water has made a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the students. - Community Benefits:
The well benefits 150 households from seven villages, providing them with easier access to water. The community now has more time and less strain to get water, especially women like Regina Mateyu, who no longer have to spend hours fetching water from distant sources. - Reduced Family Conflicts:
The new water source has also reduced tensions in the community, as families no longer have to worry about disputes over water collection.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Brian and Joelle Kelly Family Foundation for their generous donation. This well is a blessing to both the school and the surrounding community, and it is helping to develop future leaders in Malawi.
