At Makawa, the joy of clean water is celebrated in song: “Water wells has given life.” The transformation is undeniable. The village chair reflected on how life used to be: “We had such a long way to go to get water. It was an hour’s walk, followed by long waits to go down the steps into the hand-dug well.”
Now, while there’s still a line in the mornings—with 40 buckets queued—the water is plentiful, and life has dramatically improved. There is no more sickness, some families have thriving gardens, and all the children are attending school on time. Hygiene has taken a leap forward, with the ability to bathe regularly, even three times a day.
The community takes pride in preserving their water, prohibiting its use for brick-making to ensure it remains available for drinking, farming, and daily needs. “Families are happy now. No more doubt,” the chair added. Even the goats seem content, enjoying the benefits of a healthier environment.
At Makawa, clean water has brought not just survival but flourishing—unifying the village and opening the door to a brighter future.
