Stories/Quotes
Families: 70, 1 village (26 ppl at dedication)
Water Committee: 7 women, 3 men
Nelson Kaluwa: chair: “This is the first well in this area. It is a dream come true for us. I was born here 40 years ago. My parents were born here after my grandparents came here. We are so happy. We will build better and bigger houses and corrals for livestock.”
Flora: “We have so many empty promises. Our water was contaminated. It was hard to garden because water was so far. We can wash our blankets and have clean bedding. We couldn’t wash our blankets. Now we can also wash ourselves two or three times a day with an entire bucket of water. We used to wash with a cup of water.”
Women: “All our kids are in school. There is much improvement in school attendance. Our food tastes better and smells better with clean water. We were cooking with moldy water with frogs and insects. We are eating more without worrying. We can sleep until 7:00 am. Our husbands were worried because we were gone so long to get water. We would be gone sometimes all night. Our husbands used to beat us for being late and accused us of being with other men. We told our husbands, ‘Come, follow us and see where we get water.’ Our families are stronger. We would fight every day at the old water point and break a bucket. Now there is peace.”
