Challenges Before the Water Well

  • Long Distance for Water:
Before this well was installed, students had to walk three kilometers to fetch water. This meant they often missed class time, affecting their education and performance.
  • Inadequate Water Supply:
Even with buckets, the water available was insufficient for the large number of students. The buckets needed to be replenished frequently, making it difficult for students to stay focused on their studies.
  • Sanitation Issues:
The school faced poor hygiene, with toilets that were not well-maintained. This presented health risks to both students and teachers.
  • Menstrual Health Challenges:
Girls who had reached puberty faced difficulties during menstruation. They often had to leave school to go home and fetch water to clean themselves, which caused them to miss important class time.

Impact of the New Water Well

  • Improved Access to Water:
The new well has provided easy access to clean water, allowing students to drink water without having to leave school, which has reduced class disruptions.
  • Better Sanitation:
The school can now keep its toilets and classrooms clean, ensuring better hygiene and a healthier environment for both students and teachers.
  • Empowered Girls:
Girls who previously missed school due to menstrual health challenges now have access to water to manage their periods, enabling them to stay in class and continue their education.
  • Community Benefit:
In addition to the school, 76 households in the surrounding village are benefiting from the new water well, improving life for families who no longer have to spend hours fetching water.
  • Strengthened Communities:
The well has not only benefited the school, but it has also helped strengthen families and reduce the burden on women and children. As one of the committee members, Maimuna Ali, shared, it has reduced the amount of time families spent collecting water, which has had a positive impact on family life and relationships.

Once again, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the Brian and Joelle Kelly Family Foundation for their generous donation of this water well, which has already transformed life here at Mwanjati Primary School and the surrounding community.
