Before the well, life in the village was marked by hardship and loss. Hours were spent searching for and carrying water, with the only source being a dirty stream that has since dried up. While there was one existing water well in the area, it was too far to meet the community’s needs. Cholera, diarrhea, and malaria attacked the village repeatedly, claiming five lives to cholera in 1992. Frequent trips to a clinic 11 kilometers away only added to their struggles. Children were often late to school or missed it entirely, as water collection took priority over education.
Now, with the arrival of the new well, life has transformed. Families have time to focus on house chores and income-generating activities, leading to happier and more stable homes. Gardening has flourished, with an increase in produce and the establishment of a community garden. Villagers are even making bricks to build better homes. Children now arrive at school on time, their grades improving, and their futures brightened—all because of clean, accessible water. The well has truly become a wellspring of opportunity and hope.
