Stories / Quotes:
Families: 30
Water committee: 5 men and 5 women
Before the well, the community relied on a river 1 kilometer away, which often dried up during this season. To fetch water, they would travel to a river 2 hours away, returning with only 2 to 3 buckets of dirty water. Cholera and diarrhea were rampant, especially during the rainy season, with people falling ill 1 to 2 times a month. Women spent so much time fetching water that they couldn’t prepare meals, leaving children hungry. Tensions in households were high, with couples frequently fighting. Students often went to school thirsty, and many struggled to arrive on time.
Now, life has improved dramatically. With access to clean water, the community can easily collect 10 buckets or more, freeing up their time for productive activities. Gardening has flourished, with pumpkins and mustard seeds now being grown. Some women have started small businesses, such as selling donuts, creating additional income for their families. The clean water has eradicated cholera and diarrhea, improving overall health. Family dynamics have improved, with fewer conflicts between spouses. Students can drink water on their way to school, and all 400 children from Makunula now attend school on time, well-nourished and ready to learn.
