Stories / Quotes:

Families: 110
Water Committee: 4 men and 6 women

Before the water well was installed, families in Kambadya relied on a hand-dug well just 5 meters deep. They could collect only two or three buckets of water a day, leaving little time for anything else. Bathing was difficult, and keeping homes and families clean was a challenge.

The water situation also affected health. Families suffered from diarrhea and other waterborne illnesses. Since the new well was installed, community members report a great reduction in waterborne sicknesses.

With reliable water close to home, families can now use water for more than their most basic needs. They bathe twice a day, wash their clothes and household items, and say that hygiene at home has improved. Community members also say family problems have decreased, including suspicion from husbands when women spent long periods away collecting water.

The change is creating new opportunities, too. Families are growing home gardens and molding bricks for the first time. With water no longer taking up so much of the day, they can also spend more time working.

Children are seeing a difference at school. Kakao Full Primary School is only half a kilometer away, and children now stop at the well for water on their way to school. Attendance has increased from 40% to 100%, and community members say their grades have improved.

The well is open for everyone to use, giving 110 families access to a reliable source of clean water. As one community member put it, “Our quality of life has improved with the coming of this water well.”
