Families: 75
Water Committee: 4 men and 6 women
Jumbe Village has lived its entire history without clean water. Families drew from streams, digging during the dry season, often managing just one or two buckets a day. Rainy seasons brought some relief, but also danger—waterborne illnesses like cholera were so common that visiting the clinic, 15 kilometers away, was a frequent and costly necessity. This year alone, three villagers lost their lives.
The women of Jumbe, elected to the Water Committee for the first time, have become the heartbeat of this transformation. “I feel proud to serve,” says Mayana Kalumba. Nadiyes, another committee member, recalls, “Before, we fought over water every day. Now, we can focus on our families instead of chasing buckets.” Samuel, a local father, adds, “Water has brought peace—women come home on time, and the household is calmer.”
Life with the new borehole is unrecognizable. Villagers can fetch all the water they need without waking before dawn. Children attend school on time, clean and ready to learn. Families grow maize, cowpeas, cassava, and sweet potatoes, building gardens they could never manage before. Dreams are blooming alongside their crops: Stella wants to be a nurse, Roseby a teacher, Memory a nurse, and Tarlandila a teacher.
Jumbe’s first well is more than a source of water—it is a fountain of health, opportunity, and hope, shaping the village for generations to come.
