Families: Over 200 households and 3 villages
Before the well, the community depended on a shallow well for water, which often dried up, yielding only 1 or 2 buckets per day. This scarce supply led to conflicts among community members, with people rising early every day to fight for water. Men, unable to have breakfast, grew frustrated, and misunderstandings bred tension in households. Women were accused of meeting other men while fetching water, leading to domestic violence. Falesi reported being beaten 5 times a week, while Modesta was beaten 3 times weekly. Health issues were rampant, with many falling ill from cholera and frequent trips to the clinic costing 6000 kwacha round trip, up to 2 to 3 times a month.
After the well, life has transformed with the arrival of the well. Cholera, once a constant threat, is now palibe (gone). Access to abundant water has brought peace to the community, with families united and misunderstandings resolved. Falesi and Modesta no longer endure violence, and they now have time to farm, sleep, and focus on productive activities. Women have started baking donuts and selling tomatoes and sweet potatoes, contributing to household incomes. Meals taste better, and hygiene has improved significantly, creating healthier and happier households.
