Before the borehole, families relied on distant, contaminated rivers. The two-hour trips often led to waterborne illness, and in 2023 four villagers died from cholera. Many families went to the clinic up to three times a week. Women feared sending their children to fetch water, especially during the rainy season when floods made the rivers deadly.
Now, with their first clean water source in history, life in Mthunzi has transformed. “This is the first Water Well in my village since creation,” said Chief Mthunzi. Domestic conflict has eased, children are safe, and families are healthy.
With time and strength restored, the community is focusing on farming and planning new small businesses. As one woman shared: “Now we can work on our gardens without having to worry about water.” Looking ahead with joy, Chief Mthunzi added: “The next time you come you will see many babies.”
