Students:

  • 2017: 500 total students
  • 2020: 277 boys, 357 girls = 634 total students
  • 2021: 678 total students
  • 2022: 725 total students
  • 2023: 749 total students
  • 2024 (October): 383 boys, 411 girls = 804 total students
  • 2024 (December enrollment): 900 total students

Since the installation of the borehole on January 29, 2021, Kanungu Primary has experienced transformative changes. The water well has not only improved access to clean water but also enhanced sanitation. With improved facilities for handwashing, toilets, and classrooms, the school has seen a dramatic reduction in waterborne diseases, such as cholera, dysentery, and diarrhea.

In 2017, the school had 500 learners. By 2024, enrollment has grown to 804 students, and the school expects to reach 900 by the end of the year. This rise in enrollment is a testament to the positive impact the water well has had on attendance and academic performance.

The community has also seen the development of additional facilities, including changing rooms for girls through our Blossom Project, which have helped address absenteeism and dropout rates among female students. Previously, many girls would miss school during puberty due to a lack of proper sanitation facilities. Now, the changing rooms have given them the ability to stay in school regularly.

The school has also seen a significant reduction in dropout rates:

  • 2020: 130 dropouts (67 girls, 63 boys)
  • 2021: 76 dropouts (46 girls, 30 boys)
  • 2022: 65 dropouts (35 girls, 30 boys)
  • 2023: 45 dropouts (22 girls, 23 boys)

The pass rate for the 2023-2024 academic year has reached 94%, a 10% increase from the previous year. Kanungu is now ranked #4 out of 15 schools, compared to #6 in 2022-2023, showing remarkable academic improvement.

The school’s choir sings: “We had no water and no changing room. Now we are able to come to school on a regular basis. Girls can stay in school with changing rooms.”

As Joel Lazaro  expressed, “I am happy for the good things WWFA has done. In 2021, water wells came when we were struggling. Since the borehole’s installation, attendance has increased, absenteeism has decreased, and learners are coming to school.”

The community is grateful for these improvements, especially the chiefs, who said, “You have given a future to the girl child.”

Because of WWFA supporters, Kanungu Primary is thriving, with 800+ students and continuing to make strides in academic performance, sanitation, and student retention.
