Stories / Quotes:
Lovemore Phiri: “At first, we had more boys than girls. Now we have more girls than boys. In teaching girls, we are building the future. In our zone of 14 schools, we are #1 in all subjects the girls are doing as well as the boys and even better. The top students in standard 4 and 5 are both girls. When there is no water, girls cannot come to school. We used to have 133 girls, now there is 177.”
Mrs. George: “Cholera hit hard in the surrounding areas, but not here. Now 100% of children go to school. Most girls go to school now. The girls are much affected because they collect water from the river. This school is #1 in the zone.”
Lovemore Phiri, the headmaster said, “We will build more classrooms. Retention rates are good. Absenteeism is reduced. My aim is to have full Standard in 2027. If we get help from the government. Our big challenges are teacher housing, permanent classrooms and toilets. It’s hard to learn in such a difficult environment. I ride my bike 18km one way from my place at one hour and back another 18km. I leave at 5:55 am. It is difficult in the rainy season when the roads flood and there are no bridges.”
