Families: 110 households
Water Committee: 4 men and 6 women

Chief Butwa shared that this is the first source of safe, potable water in his village’s history.

“I never imagined we would have a well here,” he said. “Before, five members of one family could be in the hospital in a single week because of waterborne diseases.”

With Kajawo’s old well broken, residents relied on a river an hour away, often contaminated by livestock. Women walked 45 minutes one way and spent up to seven hours collecting just one bucket—used only for cooking.

Getrude Winston recalled:
“There were fights in marriages. Men were jealous, thinking their wives were having affairs because they were gone so long at the water point.”

Mr. Solomoni added that thieves would break into homes while women were away fetching water. “Development stalled because everything that needed water couldn’t move forward. Now things will change.”

Ten-year-old Bertha Chimbatata also shared:
“I used to complain when I had to fetch water and prepare for school. Sometimes I didn’t go, or I went without bathing. That bothered me. Now I fetch water easily and go to school consistently.”

This well has brought health, safety, and dignity to Butwa, Kajawo, and Nyadani villages.
