Stories / Quotes:
At Nkundula Primary School, clean water is changing the rhythm of education. For years, girls were expected to fetch water for younger students, a responsibility that often kept them out of class. “Water development is friendly to girls. That is why the numbers are increasing,” a teacher observed. Some students even stopped attending, forced to leave school to meet their families’ water needs. Now, with a new borehole on campus, the situation has transformed. The “Mother Group” is encouraging girls who had dropped out to return, confident that they can attend school consistently.
Sanitation and hygiene have improved dramatically. Teachers no longer have to rely on overcrowded wells a kilometer away or unsafe river water, and students are healthier, with fewer absences from waterborne illnesses. Mr. Malunga points out that the new classrooms—eight in total, all built within the last six years—alongside student and staff toilets and a changing room for girls, are now fully functional because water is finally accessible.
Kurt Dahlin remarked, “Water has to be the first step forward in a child’s education.” At Nkundula, water isn’t just a necessity—it is the foundation for learning. Students can focus on lessons, teachers can teach without interruption, and gardens are being planted for practical agriculture lessons, showing children how life and learning flourish together when water is present.
For the school community, this well is more than a source of water; it is a lifeline that safeguards health, strengthens education, and opens doors for generations of children to dream bigger.
