Rosa Village has existed since 1991, but for more than three decades the community never had clean water. Every day began before sunrise, with women and children walking 1.5 km to the river. A single trip took nearly three hours and often ended in conflict when water was scarce. Some families returned with only one bucket—two if they were lucky.
Margaret, a member of the Water Committee and a survivor of cholera, told us how dangerous the river water had been. Many had suffered from diarrhea and waterborne illnesses. Some had even died. The clinic was too far to visit regularly, so most simply endured.
Everything changed once the well was installed.
Now families can collect 10, 15, even 20 buckets a day. They bathe three times instead of once—sometimes instead of not at all. “Our husbands are happy that we are bathing,” the women laughed.
The impact stretches beyond health. With clean water close by, families can grow nurseries near their homes instead of far afield. Tobacco, pumpkin leaves, tomatoes, and mustard are already thriving—and ready for sale. Meals taste better. People feel “clean and smart.”
Peace has returned to households that once argued over the long hours spent fetching water. And children who used to miss school—sometimes dropping out entirely—now arrive on time. “All of our kids are going, and they are so smart.”
Even single men in Rosa joked about their newfound confidence:
“Now we believe we can find wives because we have water.”
In Rosa, clean water hasn’t just met a need; it’s revived a sense of possibility that had been waiting for over 30 years.
